Hunter Dobbins shuts down Yankees to lift Red Sox

Hunter Dobbins threw six shutout innings to lead the host Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees Saturday.

After beating New York 2-1 Friday, the Red Sox have a chance to sweep the Yankees for the first time since August 2023.

Dobbins (4-1, 3.74 ERA) was dominant, allowing just two hits and walking one. He struck out five in 82 pitches.

The rookie right-hander has beaten Carlos Rodon and the Yankees in back-to-back starts.

Greg Weissert gave up a run in the ninth, but earned his second save.

Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, giving him six strikeouts in the two games against the Red Sox.

Rodon (8-5, 3.01 ERA) gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned) and walked two in five-plus innings. He struck out four on 92 pitches.

The left-hander had not lost in two months before losing 11-7 to the Red Sox in his previous start.

The Red Sox opened the scoring in the first inning when leadoff hitter Rob Refsnyder doubled on the first pitch.

With two outs, Carlos Narvaez hit a grounder to deep shortstop. Anthony Volpe fielded the ball in the hole and threw the ball away at first. Refsnyder scored on the single and error.

Narvaez, who had the game-winning hit in the 10th inning Friday night, started a rally in the fourth with a leadoff double, then scored on a one-out double by Trevor Story.

The Red Sox scored again in the fifth.

Rookie Kristian Campbell was hit by a pitch with two strikes. Romy Gonzalez sent him home on a two-out double to right-center field for a 3-0 Boston lead.

Boston chased Rodon in the sixth. Story led off with a double off the Green Monster. Yerry De los Santos came in for Rodon. Ceddanne Rafaela bunted Story to third and rookie Marcelo Mayer sent him home with a sacrifice fly to left for a four-run lead.

The Yankees got on the board as soon as Dobbins left the game.

Reliever Luis Guerrero started the seventh by walking Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Jason Dominguez drove in Goldschmidt with a one-out single.

Austin Wells made it 4-2 by scoring Chisholm on a single off reliever Justin Wilson.

The threat ended when Wilson struck out DJ LeMahieu and Narvaez picked Dominguez off second base with Trent Grisham at the plate.
